Always Import Shift & Payroll Bulk Files into a Dedicated Secondary Calendar
Google Calendar has no "Undo Import" button. If you import 184 rotating shifts directly into your primary personal calendar and realize your platoon start date was off by one day, you would have to delete all 184 shifts one-by-one! Isolating bulk imports in a dedicated secondary calendar takes 15 seconds and gives you a 2-click clean slate:

1. Step-by-Step: Importing an .ICS File into Google Calendar
Once you have previewed and downloaded your .ics file from WCalendar (or saved an attachment from HR), complete these four steps on Google Calendar Web:
Step 1: Verify and Download Your .ICS File
Check the first three shift dates or pay dates in WCalendar's live preview, then click Download ICS. Confirm the saved filename ends in .ics (and unzip it first if an external system packaged multiple calendars inside a .zip archive).
Step 2: Open Settings → Import & Export
Visit calendar.google.com, click the Settings gear icon in the top-right header bar, choose Settings, and select Import & export in the left-hand navigation menu.
Step 3: Select File & Choose Your Secondary Calendar
Click Select file from your computer and pick your .ics file. Open the Add to calendar dropdown right below it and explicitly pick your dedicated secondary calendar (it defaults to your primary calendar if you skip this!). Click Import.
Step 4: Confirm the Event Count & Mobile Sync
Google displays a confirmation dialog reading "Imported X out of X events." On your iPhone or Android phone, open the Google Calendar app, tap the top-left menu, and ensure the checkbox next to your new secondary calendar is checked so it renders on mobile.
2. One-Time .ICS File Import vs. URL Calendar Subscription (webcal://)
Users frequently confuse Import & export (uploading a local .ics file) with Add calendar → From URL (subscribing to a hosted https:// or webcal:// feed). Google Calendar handles these two workflows completely differently:

3. Google Calendar .ICS Troubleshooting (Timezones, UIDs & Limits)
Shifts Imported onto the Wrong Day or Hour
Verify Settings → General → Time zone matches your home timezone before importing floating local timestamps. WCalendar exports date-based shift and payroll schedules using RFC 5545 VALUE=DATE properties so all-day entries never shift backward at midnight UTC.
Duplicate Events vs. Ignored Re-Imports (UID)
Google Calendar keys every event by its RFC 5545 UID inside each calendar. Uploading the exact same file twice updates existing entries in place; uploading a newly generated file with fresh UIDs adds a second copy unless you delete the old secondary calendar first.
"Failed to Import Events" (~1 MB File Limit)
Google Calendar rejects single .ics uploads larger than roughly 1 MB–1.5 MB (about 1,500–2,500 verbose events) or files containing unescaped newlines. Export 12-month intervals rather than 10-year ranges, and consult our

Imported Calendar Missing on iPhone / Apple Calendar
If you sync Google Calendar into Apple's native iOS Calendar app, new Google secondary calendars must be enabled at calendar.google.com/calendar/syncselect before Apple's CalDAV bridge displays them.
